Bowl for Health: A Model for Engaging Communities and Promoting Wellbeing
The Bowls Development Alliance (BDA) is proud to showcase the success of Bowl for Health, an outreach programme that is making a real difference in communities across the country. Designed to introduce people of all ages and abilities to the sport of bowls, this initiative has proven to be a powerful tool for fostering physical and mental wellbeing, tackling inequalities, and reducing social isolation.
With its 8-week format, Bowl for Health combines an hour of informal bowls with a relaxed social gathering over refreshments. This approach not only makes the sport accessible and enjoyable but also helps build lasting connections within local communities. By creating a welcoming and supportive environment, the programme reflects the key principles of Sport England’s Uniting the Movement strategy, delivering meaningful impact at a grassroots level.
Margaret, a participant at Rugby Thornfield Outdoor Bowls Club, emphasised the comprehensive health benefits: “The Bowl for Health course is an excellent way to improve physical and mental health and to promote social interaction. Members were available to explain the game and to give useful tips and encouragement. I could feel the physical benefits of the exercise, and learning the skills exercised my brain and boosted my morale. I also met new people and everyone was friendly and supportive.”
Transforming Lives Through Sport
The impact of Bowl for Health is best captured through the stories of its participants, such as Peter and Dawn.
Peter, who took part at Avenue Bowls Club in Coventry, shared his enthusiasm: “The following weeks just got better and better, as did our bowls. It was a pleasure to be there. A few of my friends came, too, with one joining after his first session. I was very lucky to find out about this programme and I am really looking forward to continuing next season (with my own set of bowls).” He added: “This initiative scheme has been a great bonus for me to keep me healthy and fit and get me out of the house more, and I look forward to the changes it will make to my future plans. I’m hooked.”
Dawn, who joined at Rugby Thornfield Outdoor Bowls Club, was looking for a new challenge: “I enjoy walking, but I’ve always been drawn to competitive sports. I wanted to try something different and meet new people. It was free, it needed no initial commitment, and it was something new to try where instruction was available.”
Her advice to others considering the programme? “Give it a go. You’ll learn a new skill, meet new people, and have the chance to take part in other social events.”
Sarah, also from Rugby Thornfield Outdoor Bowls Club, highlighted the social benefits: “I attended the bowls club as I thought this would be a good activity to try as a single person. From week one I have been made to feel very welcome; everyone is so friendly and easy to approach when asking for advice. I have made new friends along the way. I definitely want to join in April next year.”
Julie, a participant at Atherstone Grove Bowls Club, underlined the programme’s alignment with broader health goals: “It is great that this programme gets people who may be sedentary and lonely doing more exercise in a bid to keep fit and healthy.”
A Blueprint for Success
The Bowl for Health programme demonstrates how sport can drive positive change by combining physical activity with social interaction. Its success is underpinned by several key elements:
· Accessibility: Sessions are free and require no initial commitment, breaking down barriers to participation.
· Supportive Environment: Friendly instruction ensures participants feel confident and welcomed, regardless of their prior experience.
· Community Building: The social aspect fosters a sense of belonging, encouraging participants to stay involved beyond the initial 8 weeks.
One participant summed up the motivation perfectly: “My motivation was that it was good exercise, an opportunity to meet people, and have fun learning a new skill. It has given me the opportunity to meet other people within my local area that I otherwise would not have had the opportunity to meet.”
By focusing on inclusivity, enjoyment, and community spirit, Bowl for Health highlights the power of sport to address key societal challenges, from physical inactivity to social isolation. It serves as an inspiring model for how targeted programmes can deliver significant benefits for individuals and communities alike.
